What is a Computer "Tune-Up"?

At Badgerland Computers & Networking we have a product called the “Tune-Up”. For more than 25 years we have used this term to refer to a set of processes that improves your computers performance. In many cases it “tunes” your machine to a performance point you may not have experienced since it was brand new.

What Exactly Is It?

The “tune-up” is a set of processes that are run on your computer. They include:

·        Virus Removal

·        Potentially Unwanted Program (PUPS) removal

·        Cache clearing

·        Temp File Deleting

·        Applications Updated

·        Firewall Settings Update

·        Security Patches Updated

·        Windows Patches & Feature releases

·        Browser Updates

·        Corrupt File fixes

·        Driver Updates

·        Disk Sector Repair

·        Memory Tests

·        CPU Stress Test

·        Power Supply Tests

·        Physical Cleaning (Inside and Out)

·        Privacy Settings Update

·        Recovery Media Creation

·        CMOS Battery tests

·        Laptop Battery Life Test

·        Laptop Charger Testing

The process typically takes 48 to 72 hours to complete depending on the speed of your hardware.

Do I need a “Tune-Up”?

Yes, If you are asking yourself this question, the answer is likely yes. As your computer is used each day, each time, each session you lose a small fraction of your computer’s life and performance. Moving parts wear or collect dust, files move around, software gets updated. If you add all the small losses of performance over time you end up with 50%, 72%, 45%, 83% of the performance you once had, but because you are only losing 0.00029% each use you don’t notice it.

Does every computer need a “Tune-Up” the same?

No, computers are not all created equal. If you purchased a high-performance laptop 3 years ago (i7 8th Generation) you may not be to the point where you need to regain performance yet. But it you purchased a low performance computer 2 years ago (Pentium Silver / AMD A8) you are likely past due for a tune-up and your computer is having a very hard time keeping up with all the updated and applications needing performance.

How often do I need a “Tune-Up”?

It depends on the computer and how you use it. Computers that are on the low end of the price/performance range used by a family often need a tune up once a year as they are in constant heavy use. If you have a high-end gaming device used just for games a tune-up could be in the 24-month range. As a general rule 12-18 months is the range where a tune-up makes the most sense for customers.
