2020 - Where are the Viruses?

You can't protect yourself by being "careful"!

Viruses are everywhere these days. It doesn’t matter how careful you are, any page on the internet is capable of infecting your computer. Sounds scary, doesn’t it? Having the proper protection for your computer is increasingly important. Anti-virus is something EVERY computer needs.  Yes, even Macs can get viruses.

In 2020 Badgerland Computers & Networking helped a lot of business and home users that pulled down a virus onto their machines.   It sounds strange, but we also found a lot of viruses our customers did not even know they had.   So where did they get them?

Top Sources of Viruses we saw in 2020

Email - Links & Attachments

As you may suspect email attachments top our list.   The Fedex shipping label, link to register, get something free or helpful document you were emailed is still the #1 source of infections.

Downloaded Programs & Software

Any code that you get FREE on the internet is likely to have strings attached.  Even trusted programs can have bad software inserted when you do updates.

DIY / How To / Self Help Sites

Yes, not porn sites, but quilting sites. Not drug and alcohol sites, but new home plans.  The bad stuff is wherever you are and we are seeing a HUGE increase in infections coming from side bar ads, helpful downloaded documents, and ads running on trusted websites.

What can I do?

  • Make sure you are running Anti-Virus (Not Windows Defender) and yes you too Mac users
  • Potentially upgrade to an Anti-Virus that rates your Web search links
  • Be vigilant - if something seems wrong or out of place, STOP!

BONUS TIP

NEVER LET SOMEONE CONNECT TO YOUR COMPUTER FOR REMOTE CONTROL.    NOT THE IRS, MICROSOFT, SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION  -----  NOBODY!

Give us a call 920.674.6833 or email info@badgerlandpc.com and we can help out.
