Businesses Need a Firewall - Yes You!

You woke up this morning thinking of how to grow your business, working to close the deal you have been working on, and thinking of adding that new person to the team.  You were not thinking that while you were having coffee 1,000’s of times your business network was probed for vulnerabilities. The bad guys tried to get in all night long looking for your account information, financials, intellectual property, even trying to actively shutdown or lock you out of your own computers and systems.

Every single hour of every day the Badgerland Computers & Networking offices have our Fort Atkinson and Watertown locations probed, scanned, and inspected by the same people that are trying to get into your system. The first line of defense is hardware-based firewall. Firewall are physical devices that get connected between your internet and your computers, printers, servers, wireless, telephone, and security systems.

I am too small to be a target

If you think you are too small to be at risk…

Just In 2020:

·        90% of remote code execution attacks are associated with crypto mining (PurpleSec)

·        60% of data beach events happened in companies with less than 25 employees (Symantec)

·        Cloud-based cyber attacks rose 630% between January and April 2020. (FinTech News)

·        81% of Cyber attaches are unnoticed or unreported by the victim (Blckburg Group)

What do they want from me?

There are many groups that want into your network for lots of reasons. It could be as simple as trying to encrypt your financial software so you will have to pay to get back in business (RansomWare). They may be looking for open ways to run code on your computers to send out SPAM or mine Cryptocurrency with your computer’s resources (CrytoJacking), or it maybe they want to target getting the payroll information so they can steal the identity of your employees (Identity Theft).

I have a firewall from my Internet Provider (Spectrum, AT&T, …)

While this may seem to be a great solution to get your internet, firewall, and wireless from the same device, there is a fundamental problem. These devices do not provide the level of security you may think. By default, these devices are not secure, don’t have settings that provide the right protection out of the box, and may already have stopped receiving updated information on how to defend against the latest threats before you even powered it on.    Unless you are a home user or an office that does not have equipment on and running all the time (servers, computers, telephones, printers, ….)  These devices are not a good choice to protect your business.

What do I need to do?
